The Beamish and Crawford brewery on South Main St which closed earlier this year.  Beamish is now (I think) brewed over in the Heineken brewery on the other side of the city along with fellow Cork stout Murphy’s.  I wonder how Heineken will treat the two stouts which are in competition with each in other in the Cork/Munster area.  I switch between the two to be honest and always recommend them above Guinness to foreign visitors looking for that quintessential Irish pint.

The oft-photographed little church at Guagán Barra a few miles on from Béal Atha an Ghaorthaidh.  This is the starting point of the River Lee which runs all the way to Cork City.

The church here is tiny with just enough room for one person to go up the aisle.  I played the uilleann pipes at a wedding here when I was barely a teenager for my neighbour who was teaching me the violin at the time.  Brave move (for her!) but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I still play some of the tunes I learned for that wedding to this day.  I no longer play the violin though!

Bord Gais Energy recently starting selling electricity to the Irish market, adding to the incumbent ESB and another recent entrant, Airtricity.  This shows the Bord Gais HQ in Cork with part of the slick marketing campaign attached to the buiding.  They even have a Twitter account as part of the online presence.

A woman checks out cinema listings at the North Gate Cinema.  There are a few Gate cinemas around Cork now and this one was closed for ages when a fire in the adjoining apartment complex caused serious smoke damage in the cinema.  Good to see it open again, it’s not as smelly as the much vaunted Mahon Point cinema!

The Elysian is a fantastic looking building but I think somebody somewhere got a little over-eager with their marketing campaign.  I still don’t know how the Elysian was allowed to go ahead by the way it completely overshadows Cork City Hall from the city side.  The Elysian is now open for business, time to get yourself that city apartment you always dreamed of?  Or is the recession going to kick in and knock the wind out of the Elysian hype?

The last few days have certainly been a welcome Indian summer after the record-breaking wet summer we had this year.  A few days of unbroken sunshine has been almost unheard of for the past few months with people making the most of the good weather.  I was down in Fota last weekend and the place was really busy. The photo above shows the Clarion in the background with offices and restaurant in the foreground.

As I mentioned the other day, the above installation was put in place for the Culture Night last Friday.  I’m not sure how long they are going to be there but they remind of an ad for Channel 4 when I’m driving into town and see them from across the river.  Does this constitute art for you?
