The Beamish and Crawford brewery on South Main St which closed earlier this year.  Beamish is now (I think) brewed over in the Heineken brewery on the other side of the city along with fellow Cork stout Murphy’s.  I wonder how Heineken will treat the two stouts which are in competition with each in other [...]]]>

The Beamish and Crawford brewery on South Main St which closed earlier this year.  Beamish is now (I think) brewed over in the Heineken brewery on the other side of the city along with fellow Cork stout Murphy’s.  I wonder how Heineken will treat the two stouts which are in competition with each in other in the Cork/Munster area.  I switch between the two to be honest and always recommend them above Guinness to foreign visitors looking for that quintessential Irish pint.

A woman checks out cinema listings at the North Gate Cinema.  There are a few Gate cinemas around Cork now and this one was closed for ages when a fire in the adjoining apartment complex caused serious smoke damage in the cinema.  Good to see it open again, it’s not as smelly as the much vaunted Mahon Point cinema!

The Corner House and and its next door neighbour Sin E are two homely welcoming pubs in Cork which haven’t succumbed to the clean crisp metallic super pub feel of quite a lot of other pubs.  Not saying that they’re dirty but they have character. The Elysian is a fantastic looking building but I think somebody somewhere got a little over-eager with their marketing campaign.  I still don’t know how the Elysian was allowed to go ahead by the way it completely overshadows Cork City Hall from the city side.  The Elysian is now open for business, time to get yourself that city apartment you always dreamed of?  Or is the recession going to kick in and knock the wind out of the Elysian hype?

The last few days have certainly been a welcome Indian summer after the record-breaking wet summer we had this year.  A few days of unbroken sunshine has been almost unheard of for the past few months with people making the most of the good weather.  I was down in Fota last weekend and the place was really busy. The photo above shows the Clarion in the background with offices and restaurant in the foreground.
