DJ Yoda played in Cork as part of the Coors Light Peak tour. I usually keep these music posts over on my main blog but I thought I’d throw up a photo to mark the occasion. What a great gig! Have a look on Youtube for some of his tracks, what a genius.

Depressing End to Beamish

The Beamish and Crawford brewery on South Main St which closed earlier this year. Beamish is now (I think) brewed over in the Heineken brewery on the other side of the city along with fellow Cork stout Murphy’s. I wonder how Heineken will treat the two stouts which are in competition with each in other in the Cork/Munster area. I switch between the two to be honest and always recommend them above Guinness to foreign visitors looking for that quintessential Irish pint.

Leichardt Brass Band in Cork

A few weeks ago I was rushing along to see the Lee Swim when I came across the Leichardt Brass Band playing outside the Cork City Library. It’s great to see unexpected public performances of music.

Busking Piper

Uilleann piper Ian busking on the streets of Cork a week or so ago. “Why not get paid to practice” is his attitude. So true!

In another online life, I play the pipes myself with the Cork Pipers Club.

What’s on at the North Gate?

A woman checks out cinema listings at the North Gate Cinema. There are a few Gate cinemas around Cork now and this one was closed for ages when a fire in the adjoining apartment complex caused serious smoke damage in the cinema. Good to see it open again, it’s not as smelly as the much vaunted Mahon Point cinema!

Murphy’s Folk Club at the Corner House

The Corner House and and its next door neighbour Sin E are two homely welcoming pubs in Cork which haven’t succumbed to the clean crisp metallic super pub feel of quite a lot of other pubs. Not saying that they’re dirty but they have character.

Sunny Autumn Day

The last few days have certainly been a welcome Indian summer after the record-breaking wet summer we had this year. A few days of unbroken sunshine has been almost unheard of for the past few months with people making the most of the good weather. I was down in Fota last weekend and the place was really busy. The photo above shows the Clarion in the background with offices and restaurant in the foreground.

Here’s To The Real Capital

Good to see Budweiser have their heads screwed on properly and know where the real capital of Ireland is. Although, cynical old me reckons there’s a similarily ingratiating ad in most cities of the world.
