I like the old Irish script where a dot over the letter denotes a séimhiú or h in the word. This shop in Skibbereen had that but also a plaque commemorating Diarmaid Ó Donnabháin Rossa who founded the Phoenix National and Literary Society.

Animals on Pillars

What’s the deal with putting animal statues on your pillars? There was a spate of them down in Skibbereen, some owls were perched on another set of pillars close to where this was taken. What’s your favourite (read: worst) pillar adornment?

The aforementioned Canon James Goodman is commemorated with this fine statue at the gates to the Abbeystrewry Church in Skibbereen.

Abbeystrewry Church in Skibbereen

Abbeystrewry Church in Skibbereen is a Church of Ireland church founded by Canon Goodman. Canon Goodman was an uilleann piper and last year saw the first Canon Goodman traditional music festival in Skibbereen. I’m not sure what’s planned for this year but hopefully they will keep it going.

From the Abbeystrewry website:

Abbeystrewry is said to have got it’s name from a Cistercian abbey, the ruins of which are situated on the river Ilen on the road to Ballydehob. A new site was found in the town and a new church was given a license for divine service on 11th April 1827.

The present church was opened by Canon Goodman on 18th December 1890 after extensive renovations at a cost of £3,000 of which he contributed £700 himself.

Not So Lovely Skibbereen

While much of Skibbereen is lovely and picturesque, these recycling sites seem to attract rubbish no matter where they are. Although in this instance it’s Cork County Council who are to blame for the dumping, it would appear. Being the pedantic sort, I hadn’t even noticed that “offence” is spelt the American way. Cork County Council: Null Point.

Getting Lost in Skibbereen

Having missed our turn-off to our holiday home this weekend, we stopped on the far side of Skibbereen to turn around and try again but not before stopping for a few minutes to take a few photos. There’s something about old stone bridges such as this one going over River Ilen that always cries out to be photographed.

Boats at Lough Hyne

Just home following a very enjoyable weekend in Skibbeeren which took in a visit to Lough Hyne for a raft-building exercise. More photos to come from Sibbereen this week, but maybe not the juicy stuff! Lough Hyne itself is really beautiful and is well worth a visit, I certainly plan to go back again during the summer. From the Skibbereen Heritage website:

This unique lake and its surrounds are home to a rich and varied range of plants and animals, including many rare and beautiful species. Since it was ‘discovered’ by marine biologists in 1886, scientists have carried out pioneering research in experimental ecology. Their continued research into the factors governing the distributions of marine animals and plants make Lough Hyne on of the most- studied marine sites of Europe.
