The Clarion Hotel (left) and an office block (right) which houses the Examiner and Evening Echo offices among others shimmering off a full tide of the River Lee. These buildings are recent enough additions to the Cork landscape and have certainly livened up this area.

The trees are still bare at this time of year although today is the first day of February and we can hope for warmer weather in the coming months.

This was taken on Centre Park Road walking back into town.  I ran a part* of the Cork Marathon last year and this was near the end of my relay section and boy was I glad to be reaching the end of this road.  So, from tomorrow there will be a change in direction and a new theme for a while.  Come back to see what it is!

* A very small part!  In fact, it was the smallest part of the marathon that you could run which was a bit unfair on all the poor sods who were running the full thing!

The Elysian is quite a massive building but you really get to see how big it is in comparison to the houses on Albert Road coming into Cork City.

On a side note, how come the street lights are still on in the middle of the day?

Although coal is not so widely used in recent years, Suttons Coal on Monaghan Road is still open for business.  Suttons in Cork was acquired by Bord na Mona back in 1998 who “now imports and packages coal at six locations around the country namely; Foynes, Dublin, Cork, Dundalk, Sligo and Galway.”.  I didn’t think there was that much of a market left for coal!

The Rehab Recycle centre on Monahan Road near Cork city.  From a Cork County Council pdf document:

Cork County Council also has a contract with REHAB to collect the glass presented at he recycling centres. REHAB unload the glass banks at their centre on Monahan road, in Cork City. From there, the glass is transported for reprocessing to cullet, from which new glass is made.

If, like me, you were wondering what cullet was, a quick Google found that it’s “recycled container glass (previously used for bottles, jars and other similar glass vessels) prior to processing” which doesn’t really make sense if you look at the explanation above?!  It also has another meaning though:

The term ‘cullet’ also refers, however, to waste glass produced as a result of breakage and rejection on quality control grounds during the manufacturing process.

An ESB telecoms tower down on Centre Park Road near the Show Grounds.  The area is quite derelict but a short walk along here recently threw up some nice photos so there may be more from here for the rest of the week!
